Photography by Sebastian Copeland

Foreword by Mikhail Gorbachev

Preface by Leonardo DiCaprio

Sebastian Copeland's stunning photographs are a stark reminder of what we stand to lose. He has ventured to the bottom of the world and returned with a message that we cannot afford to ignore.

The fate of Antarctica foretells the fate of the Earth. For more than fifty years, research scientists have studied the frozen continent and its threatened and endangered creatures, including the chinstrap penguins, humpback whales and albatross. The stark yet fragile icy realm may sound our last warning before the impending destruction of the environment.

Sebastian Copeland, an award-winning photographer and environmental activist, witnessed the accelerated devastation of the Antarctica ice shelf while aboard the research vessel Ice Lady Patagonia on behalf of Global Green. He uncovered both the awesome beauty of Antarctica and the alarming warning made visible through his lens. Here the shares images of not only otherworldly glaciers, fields and fjords but also clear signs of massive inroads that climate change has made on the continent. Antarctica features Copeland's presentation of scientific data and personal insights about climate change including how and why the Polar Regions, north and south, continue to melt at an increasingly rapid pace.

Copeland serves on the Board of Directors of Global Green USA, an affiliate of Mikhail Gorbachev's Green Cross International. Global Green has spearheaded such programs as the sustainable rebuilding of New Orleans, as well as Green School, Affordable Housing and the Global Solar Fund. Proceeds will fund Global Green USA/Global Cross International's climate change program. Copeland also serves on the board of Shine on Sierra Leone, an NGO providing education for the children of war-torn nations.

Copeland's work has appeared in hundreds of publications worldwide, including GQ, Marie Claire, The Face, Cosmopolitan and Vanity Fair. His wide-ranging success as a celebrity portrait photographer has enabled him to focus on his passion for the environment. He is a leading force behind the intersection of environmental issues and celebrity activism. He currently resides in Los Angeles. He is the 2007 winner of two first place International Photography Awards.

The book includes the DVD, The Making of SOS, shot on the ice, with extensive behind-the-scenes dialogue between Copeland and his co-producer, aerial artist John Quigley. The story of this production-at-sea includes a montage of live action set to a contemporary, original musical score. Other videos include A Photographer's Eye in Antarctica, an emotional Solissimo gallery, and "Eskimo," a montage of stills and video featuring Orlando Bloom in Antarctica and the music of Damien Rice.

The publisher, Earth Aware Editions, in association with Global Re-leaf, will plant two trees for every book sold.
